The arm of the law is very long as it took the Hawks several years of investigations that led to the arrest of two Bela Bela residents on a case of fraud.
According to Hawks Spokesman Captain Matimba, the two accused, Millicent Molala a former consultant at Standard Bank and John Mtabini a security guard, are out on bail of R1000,00 after appearing before the Bela Bela Magistrate Court and are expected to appear again on Tuesday 8 March.
‘A case of fraud was opened in 2018 and 2019.It is alleged that between the period 2015 and 2019, Molala who was at the time, a consultant at Bela Bela branch, allegedly stole over R1,7 million from three different accounts belonging to the bank’s clients and transferred it into her accomplices’ bank account Mtabini,’ Matimba said.
It was reported that the two accused shared the money that was stolen, and the bank only became aware of these fraudulent transactions after the client went to enquire at the bank about the unauthorised transactions.
It was discovered that R 1200 000,00 was stolen from the first client while R369 744,34 and R200 000,00were stolen from another two clients.
Three cases of fraud were opened and transferred to the Hawks‘s Serious Commercial Crime investigation in 2018 and 2019.
